WINTER CARNIVAL

By Gretchen Abendschein

The Winter Carnival in mid-February offered a full day of entertaining outdoor activities for the entire family.

Six teams comprised of players from Acworth and surrounding towns competed in the broom hockey tournament which lasted from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM on the Mill Acres ice rink in South Acworth. Torrey Greene refereed the event. The winning team was a group of teenagers from Walpole. One can be certain that many players in the tournament spent the following day nursing bruises and stiff, achy muscles.

Mostly children participated in the snowshoe  and cross-country ski races behind the South  Acworth Village Store. Wyatt Lord won the children’s snowshoe race. Apparently he’s so comfortable in the extra footgear apparatus that he can just about run up the side of a building.

Erin Taylor, a resident of Langdon, attended the Winter Carnival with her two young sons, seven-year-old Holton and five-year-old Marshall, who both competed in the snowshoe race.

After the races behind the store, as Erin and her sons enjoyed watching the broom hockey tournament, she said, "You sure know how to have fun in Acworth!"

Bob Stocker attracted dogs that were attracted to dogs as he cooked hotdogs on an outdoor grill which were sold by Joe Ouellette in the warming shed. Smokin’ Joe’s barbequed pulled-pork sandwiches were also for sale, supplied by Joe Martin.

The Winter Carnival culminated in a dance in the Town Hall that lasted until midnight. Bill Symonds’ band, Hanky Banister, played rockin’ soulful tunes that kept people out of their seats and on the dance floor.

Band members Bill Symonds, Rob Baker, Will Turner, Lonn Livengood and Glen Rogers graciously volunteered their time playing for the dance so all proceeds went directly to the store.

The Winter Carnival raised just under $1,000 for the South Acworth Village Store.

Thanks to everyone who made this fundraiser a success.
