LINDA VOLPE
*
By Gretchen Abendschein Linda has lived in Acworth for only four years yet she already helps manage a herd of twenty-five buffalo at the Valley View Bison Farm off Crane Brook Road. The buffalo farm is a joint venture with Alvin and David Clark. Linda obviously has a great love of animals. During sugaring season when Clark’s Sugarhouse is open to the public Linda has a petting zoo as added interest for families. An emu, potbellied pigs, goats and miniature Sicilian donkeys populate the petting zoo. Linda currently has thirteen miniature Sicilian donkeys at Valley View Farm. She has bred most of the females and hopes to have about six or seven baby donkeys next fall to sell as pets. She would also like to sell two potbellied pigs; one of the pigs can be sold solo, while the other pig must be kept with his favorite barn-mate, a pygmy goat. A native of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, Linda came to Acworth four years ago after meeting David Clark in Manchester when they were both working on bridge construction. When she lived in Pittsfield Linda was a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. She would nurse injured animals back to health and then release them. Linda has helped many raccoons and skunks heal and head back to the woods, as well as a few fawns, foxes and other wild animals. Recently Linda’s 17-year-old son told her about a problem on the Fall Mountain High School athletic field: skunks were digging up the field looking for grubs. Linda gave the athletic director a Have-a-Heart Trap so he could capture the skunks without killing them. Linda then transported the caged skunks back into the wild, far away from the athletic field. Linda also breeds dogs and cats. She currently has a 13-week-old male miniature poodle for sale that is registered and has very unusual markings. Linda said the coloring is referred to as "phantom". The poodle’s coat looks like the black and red coloring of a Doberman or Rottweiler. Aside from all her critter activities, Linda has a lawn care and landscaping business. She has a small tractor so she can install lawns or do minor earthmoving jobs. Linda also plants and cares for shrubs, small trees and flowers. She mows lawns, trims bushes and does landscaping. She also has a horse trailer and is available for hire to transport horses from point A to point B.
